My daughters and I love this book. It is a great message about really appreciating and loving who you are. As an educator, I have witnessed this happen with young ladies in elementary school and this book depicts it perfectly for everyone. Great book to have in your classroom! Girls of color often see themselves as less than, not up to par when compared to other ethnicities . They relentlessly strive to fit into impractical boxes !  “Picture Day” conveys “beauty” in much broader terms.  Beauty comes in different styles, textures, and shades.  It is certainly captured in the eye of the beholder.  What we see in the mirror is not always what others see, and what we hear is often misconstrued.  Nicole does an exceptional job describing, in a light-hearted, comical way our youthful hair-pisodes.  More notable, she shines light on the fact that it’s a journey many endure successfully. As an educator, I’m always looking for books my students can identify with, and Picture Day is not only identifiable, but inspiring. All my students were engaged as they followed Amani’s day of discovery. The downloadable comprehension questions were great! I absolutely enjoyed this book from beginning to end. As a black woman, I resonated with several scenes from my youth. I especially appreciated the level of detail and vividness the author used to describe each scene.For me, this book is not just for little black girls, but any little girl. We all have imperfections and insecurities… this book teaches it is okay to embrace your natural hair,  your natural YOU, but also the value of having supportive, and encouraging people in your circle.I absolutely recommend this book for anyone who has a little girl in their life.
